If you fail to maintain your Mercedes’ exhaust system, it can get clogged, especially the catalytic converter. If the catalytic converter is clogged, you may notice rotten egg smells underneath your automobile and black exhaust flowing out of the tailpipe. EuroSense advises that other portions of the exhaust system can get clogged, as well. The exhaust system can also leak. Let’s talk more about this below.
The exhaust system is designed to remove the engine’s exhaust from the combustion chamber and release it through the exhaust pipe. If the exhaust system is clogged, the exhaust will have nowhere to go other than to remain in the combustion chamber. When this happens, your engine and acceleration will lag and sputter because the chamber is unable to produce fresh combustion.
Consequently, your Mercedes will start to get bad gas mileage because the engine is burning through the fuel more quickly in its efforts to run efficiently. Repairing the exhaust system will restore the engine’s performance and efficiency. This will bring your Mercedes’ fuel economy back to normal.
Clogs are not the only problems that exhaust systems face. They can also start to leak. For example, if you end up with a hole in your Mercedes’ muffler, the engine will get incredibly loud. You may also hear tapping or hissing noises coming from the engine if there is a leak in the exhaust manifold gasket. It’s important to have the loud noises investigated and repaired as soon as possible.
If your Mercedes does have a leak in the exhaust manifold gasket, the engine will release hot odors and overheat. This is because the gasket is allowing hot exhaust to flow into the engine. When this happens, susceptible parts that it comes into contact with will begin to melt. You will smell these burning odors coming from the engine, usually the odor of hot plastic or rubber.
You may also notice fuel odors inside your Mercedes’ passenger cabin. As you know, there is carbon monoxide in your vehicle’s exhaust. As such, if you can smell fuel while you are driving your Mercedes, pull over and call for a tow truck to bring your vehicle to our shop.
Finally, some exhaust system damage is visible to the naked eye. This is especially true in the case of the exhaust pipe. If you see your tailpipe hanging too low, it needs to be rehung or replaced. The tailpipe can also get dented by road debris or end up with holes in it.
